Why Your "Night Nanny" Search Might Actually Lead You to a Postpartum Doula
If you’re scrolling through local Cleveland Facebook groups or searching for overnight newborn care, you’ve probably seen a few different terms floating around. Let’s clear the air on what those roles actually involve.
The "Baby Nurse" vs. The "Night Nanny" vs. The Doula
In the past, the term "Baby Nurse" was the go-to. However, unless that person is a Registered Nurse, that title is a bit of a misnomer. A "Night Nanny" is typically someone who focuses 100% on the baby—they feed, they change, and they soothe.
But as Overnight Postpartum Doulas? We do all of that, plus we take care of you.
When we come into a home in Rocky River or Shaker Heights, we aren't just there to "baby-sit" while you sleep. We are there to:
Help with feeding hurdles: Whether you’re nursing and need help with a latch at 2:00 AM or you’re pumping and need someone to handle the bottle-washing and bag-labeling.
Navigate the hormones: The "baby blues" don't just happen during the day. We are a trained set of eyes to help spot the difference between normal transitions and postpartum anxiety or depression.
Build your confidence: We want you to wake up feeling like you’ve got this, not like you’re dependent on us.
Instill healthy sleep habits: It’s never too early to work on setting the environment and expectations for overnights for the newborn.
What Does a Night of Support Look Like?
For many of our families, the shift usually runs from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
The Handover: We arrive and spend 15 minutes catching up. How was your day? How is your recovery feeling? Can we answer any weird "is this normal?" questions we can answer?
The Shift: You go to sleep. Period. If the baby is bottle-feeding, you won't hear a peep until morning. If you’re nursing, we bring the baby to you, help with the positioning, and then whisk the baby away for the burping and diapering so you can get right back to sleep.
The Morning Reset: You wake up to a baby who has been expertly soothed through those tricky middle-of-the-night wakes. The kitchen is tidy, with the pump parts and bottles cleaned, and a log is waiting for you so you know exactly how the night went. What Does a Night of Support Look Like?
